Have you ever found yourself trapped in the never-ending cycle of striving for perfection, hesitating to take the next step until you’re certain it’s “right”? If so, you’re not alone, and today, we’re here to talk about the liberating concept of embracing imperfect action.
“I don’t really go down the road of right and wrong because it’s so subjective. So for me, I, you know, if people are like, I got to get it right, I’d be like, there is no right to get, there’s just what you’re creating because people, you know, get stuck in perfection paralysis, you know, trying to get things right before they put it out there.” -ME, I said this lol These words echo the power of not having to get it right, spoken by someone who understands that perfection is a subjective, often elusive goal. This notion is particularly relevant to anyone engaged in the process of creation – whether you’re an artist, entrepreneur, or visionary. Breaking Free from Perfection Paralysis The pursuit of perfection can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it drives us to refine and enhance our work. On the other hand, it can paralyze us, preventing us from taking action and realizing our dreams. When we wait for the “perfect” moment or the “perfect” creation, we often find ourselves stuck in a state of perpetual indecision. The fear of making a mistake or being judged can hinder our progress. But it doesn’t have to be this way. The Power of Imperfect Action Embracing the idea that there is no singular “right” way is liberating. It’s an acknowledgment that creation is a journey, not a destination. Imperfect actions, with their quirks and flaws, have their own unique charm and beauty. Here are a few key takeaways to remember: 1. Action Over Perfection: The act of creating is a process of exploration. The more you do, the more you learn. Imperfect actions are your stepping stones to improvement in your performance. 2. Learning from Mistakes: Mistakes and imperfections are valuable teachers. They help you refine your craft, discover new possibilities, and grow as a creator. 3. Connection and Authenticity: Perfect can be intimidating, whereas imperfect can be relatable and human. Imperfections in your creations can help you connect with your audience or your family or colleagues, on a deeper level. 4. Progress Over Perfection: Remember that progress is the game. Waiting for perfection can lead to stagnation, while taking imperfect actions moves you forward. 5. Trust Yourself: Believe in your creative instincts and the path you’re on. You don’t have to conform to external definitions of perfection. Celebrate Imperfect Action So, here’s to celebrating those imperfections, the zigzags, and the beautifully chaotic journey of creation. Embrace your creative spirit, dare to take imperfect actions, and allow your unique vision to shine through. Perfection is a mirage, but actions and the courage to create are real and tangible. Don’t let the fear of getting it “right” hold you back. Instead, let the joy of creation propel you forward, one imperfect action at a time. As we navigate the twists and turns of life, I've come to realize a profound distinction between dealing with life and creating life. In my work, especially with my highly successful clients, I often witness their exceptional abilities to handle challenges, solve problems, and manage whatever comes their way. It's precisely these skills that have contributed to their success.
However, I've also noticed that there's a fundamental difference between dealing with life effectively and creating life powerfully. Dealing with life involves a reactive approach, where we find ourselves going down and inward to manage the situations that arise. It's about reacting to the circumstances and finding solutions to the problems presented before us. On the other hand, creating life requires a shift in focus – it's an upward and outward journey into the realm of vision. It's about charting a course of action based on inspiration, aspirations, and a grander vision for the future. Creating life means taking a creative stance and deliberately shaping our destiny. In my work with clients, I focus on empowering them to transition from the world of reaction to the world of creation. I provide pathways and strategies that allow them to channel their capabilities, skills, and experiences into a space of vision and purpose. This shift enables them to continue doing the very same things they excel at, but from a different perspective – one that is future-oriented and filled with limitless possibilities. Just like a painter takes a blank canvas and transforms it into a masterpiece, we too can be the architects of our own lives. It's about embracing the power of creation and nurturing a mindset that thrives on envisioning and building a future that aligns with, and fulfills, our deepest desires. The journey from dealing with life to creating life is both liberating and transformative. It offers a sense of agency and direction that goes beyond merely reacting to external circumstances. Instead, it allows us to take charge of our narrative and make intentional choices that align with our aspirations. So, I encourage each of you to take a moment to reflect on your own lives. Are you primarily dealing with life, or are you actively engaged in creating life? If you find yourself more in the realm of reaction, know that it's never too late to shift gears and embrace the power of creation. It takes practice but hey, what else are you gonna do. Life has this fascinating way of throwing us curveballs, doesn't it? One of my personal journeys involves my amazing 92-year-old mother who's gracefully navigating through the intricate web of dementia. Now, this is a journey that could easily be overshadowed by frustration and confusion. But I've chosen a different path—one paved with love, fulfillment, and a whole lot of fun. Dementia, as it progresses, might seem like a challenge that could throw me off balance. It could lead me down the rabbit hole of "this shouldn't be happening" and "why is life unfair?" But here's the beautiful unmessablewith twist—I've chosen to step into every moment with my mother from a place of love and right now-ness. Yes, her questions might loop around repetitively, playing the same tune twelve times in one conversation. And yes, it could be tempting to respond with impatience or frustration. But instead, I've decided to be fully present. In each moment, I'm answering her question with the same right now-ness as if it were the first time she asked. Here's the magic: when I choose to be present, to be in that space of love and presence, there's no room for dis-ease. There's no frustration; there's no inner conflict. It's as if the challenges dissolve in the warmth of love and the light of presence and joy. Really. What if we could start approaching situations—be they joyful or challenging—with a heart filled with love and right now-ness. It's about showing up in the now, in the present moment, and embracing it for what it is vs being annoyed or frustrated by default. It's something to practice as we are navigating the holidays, and really every day. Right Now = Present Present = Gift Do the math, Right Now is a Gift...see if you can practice relating to it as such. In the wise words of my mother, known to most as MIMI, DO IT NOW! |
